Barefoot Kuata

Discover our magical island hideaway, located between the end of the world and the beginning of paradise in the Yasawa Islands, Fiji.

Barefoot Kuata Island is the smallest of the collection of islands known as the Waya collection and the ideal location to meet friendly reef sharks. Just a 2-hour boat ride from Port Denarau, Kuata is perfect for day trips and diving.

Not only are the beaches ideal for lazing and swimming, the reef is also home to friendly white-tipped reef sharks and make for an unforgettable snorkeling experience.

The lodge is also home to Crystal Blue Reef Safari, our sister Dive Company, offering numerous activities and dive excursions for everyone – from the intrepid first-timer to experienced divers.

We also offer deep sea fishing excursions where you get to bring home your catch of the day for one of our chefs to prepare for you.

The island’s interior is an undulating landscape of verdant tropical forests and craggy peaks with switch-backs for trekking and exploring.

Our friendly staff will be happy to take you for a tour to their nearby village, teach you about the many Fijian traditions and share their rich cultural heritage.

Barefoot Kuata Island

The Barefoot Collection comprises of two resorts located in the Yasawa Islands of Fiji: at the gateway to the archipelago is Barefoot Kuata Island, while further north lies Barefoot Manta Island. The Barefoot Collection also includes five dive schools.

Our sites boast both long-standing and ongoing efforts to implement environmentally-sustainable initiatives. Taking the form of anything from establishing MPAs (Marine Protection Areas) as “tabu”, to innovative resource management practices, these strives not only promote a devotion towards upholding sustainable eco-tourism but also champion the goals, aims and aspirations set out by Fiji’s Green Growth Framework.

Barefoot Manta Island was the first of the two resorts to be established when it opened in January 2012. Two years later, Barefoot Kuata Island was added to complete the Barefoot Collection.

Although geographically separate, our resorts represent shared efforts to invest in industry-leading levels of eco-adventure tourism as well as illustrating a combined ethos of inclusion and inspiration towards the people and communities of Fiji; a practical philosophy that has not only become our mantra but one which we feel is unrivalled in Fiji.

Welcome to The Great Fiji Shark Count !

Throughout the months of April and November every year, you have the opportunity to help celebrate and record Fiji’s amazing coral reef biodiversity, show you care about our world’s delicate coral reef systems, and have fun, by taking part in the FIJI-WIDE SHARK COUNT!

Easy to do, this is suitable for visitors and locals alike, whether you like to fish, snorkel, or SCUBA dive. We hope that tourists, school children, scientists and all people with an interest in the marine environment will take to the reefs with us to search for the Sharks of Fiji!

The Great Fiji Shark Count will be held across Fiji every April and November every year.

You can do a single count, or take part as many times as you like during that month, so that you cover different reefs. All data will be gratefully accepted!

So, see your resort, watersports operator or travel agent, get your Shark identification materials and dive into the beautiful blue waters of Fiji, to be a part of history!
